Methilda
Apartment Methilda measures 76 m2 and is a spacious one-bedroom apartment located at the top of Spino Secco. Take the beautiful spiral staircase up to the second floor, walk in and open the sliding glass door to your private terrace. Here you enjoy a magnificent view of the garden, castle, swimming-pool and the beautiful mountains around us. The terrace has a table with 4 chairs and an umbrella.
There is a large bedroom with a built-in closet, queen size bed, & a single bed suitable for a child. From your bed you could count the stars through the skylight in the ceiling. The living room and dining area are spacious too. It has a nice round table and 4 chairs, a couch and a futon which can be made into a double bed. The bathroom has a tub with a handheld shower head, toilet, bidet & sink.
The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, oven, refrigerator, pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, wine glasses, coffee maker and a small table with 2 chairs. Watch your head! The ceiling in the kitchen is slanted so it becomes low on one side. Special bonus: this apartment has air conditioning.

Who was Methilda?
History is made by and for men. Women stayed home and in the shadows. This is also the case with Methilda Malaspina. She was the sister of Alessandro Malaspina (1754-1808). They both were born in Mulazzo. But where Methilda lived a life forgotten here in our town, brother Alessandro became the famous world explorer who spend most of his life working for the Spanish navy. As an officer, he made a voyage around the world and headed the scientific Malaspina Expedition throughout the Pacific Ocean. He explored and mapped the west coast of the America’s. We only know about his sister Methilda’s existence, because when Alessandro died in 1808, in Pontremoli, he left this estate to Methilda’s daughter Teresa.
Alessandro did not leave anything to his older brother Azzo, who was the last Marquis of Mulazzo. There was bad blood among the two men, maybe because Azzo stripped our castle of everything valuable (marble etc.) to pay off his debts.
